President Trump says U.S. will call Artificial Intelligence ‘Super Intelligence’

President Donald Trump has said the United States will begin referring to artificial intelligence as “super intelligence” in official government documents, proposing the abbreviation “S.I.” for the technology.

Trump made the remarks during his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. He said the term “Artificial Intelligence” was inaccurate because the word “artificial” could make the technology sound false or inferior.

Trump rejects international AI controls

The proposed renaming formed part of a broader argument against international regulation of Artificial Intelligence. Trump told the UN that the United States rejected attempts to create what he described as a global scheme to control the technology.

He also dismissed warnings from AI-safety advocates, comparing them with past warnings about climate change and arguing that new technologies bring challenges but should not be restrained through broad international controls.

The remarks came as several governments and technology experts called for stronger safeguards around advanced AI. European leaders have urged binding measures to address the risks of systems developing faster than regulators can oversee them. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has also called for dialogue between the United States and China on the future of the technology.
